United Kingdom (UK) Education System

If you’re considering studying in the UK, understanding its education system is key.

Higher education refers to courses that are more advanced than those typically offered at the secondary level, such as GCE A levels, the Higher Grade of the SCE/National Qualification, GNVQ/NVQ level 3, or the Edexcel (formerly BTEC) or SQA National Certificate/Diploma. There are three main levels of higher education courses:

Postgraduate courses: These lead to higher degrees, diplomas, and certificates, including Doctorates, Masters (both research and taught), Postgraduate Diplomas, and Certificates. These courses usually require a first degree as an entry qualification.

Undergraduate courses: These include first degrees (both honours and ordinary), first degrees with qualified teacher status, enhanced first degrees, first degrees obtained concurrently with a diploma, and intercalated first degrees. Intercalated degrees are for first-degree students, typically in fields like medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine, who interrupt their studies to complete a one-year course of advanced studies in a related topic.

Other undergraduate courses: These encompass all other higher education courses, such as SVQ or NVQ Level 5, Diploma (HNC/D level for diploma and degree holders), HND (or equivalent), HNC (or equivalent), and SVQ or NVQ Level 4 and Diplomas in Higher Education.

The Further and Higher Education Act 1992 designated former polytechnics and some other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as universities in 1992/93. While students typically attend HE courses at HEIs, some also attend at Further Education (FE) colleges.
